ARE WE REALLY READY FOR THE PNG CHIEFS? TODAY’S BEHAVIOUR SAYS OTHERWISE 

I honestly don't know if we are ready for the PNG Chiefs and NRL-level football if this is the kind of behaviour we are going to show in our stadiums.

Today, I saw supporters breaking stadium chairs and throwing them onto the field. Reports from the area indicated that around 10 to 15 chairs, and possibly as many as 20, had already been broken. People were also throwing bottles and other containers onto the field. This isn't passionate support anymore. This is destruction.

What makes it even worse is that security had to deal with the situation while people were watching from the stands. Imagine breaking the property you are supposed to be enjoying, then throwing pieces of it onto the field. What exactly are we trying to prove? We complain that our stadiums aren't good enough, then some of us turn around and destroy the little infrastructure we have. That mentality takes us backwards.

There were also people connected with Australian rugby league who were reportedly at the stadium, including people involved in watching and assessing talent. Imagine someone coming to PNG to look at our players and instead seeing supporters behaving like this. You don't need to explain PNG to them.

The behaviour is already doing the talking. If we want the PNG Chiefs to be taken seriously and want more international opportunities for our players, our supporters also need to understand that the world is watching.

I'm not saying every Eagles supporter behaved badly. There were plenty of good supporters who came to watch the game, cheer for their team and went home peacefully. We should never generalise everyone because of the actions of a few.
