CIT CREW HELD AT GUNPOINT, GOLD AND K1 MILLION CASH STOLEN


 A Cash-in-Transit (CIT) crew was held at gunpoint during a pre-dawn ambush in Port Moresby this morning, with robbers escaping with gold bars, K1 million in cash and firearms.


The incident occurred at about 4:34am after two CIT vehicles left the GDSS base at approximately 4:30am this morning and travelled towards Jacksons International Airport via the Poreporena Freeway.


According to a preliminary statement from the CIT unit, the vehicles were approaching the Courts roundabout when a blue unmarked 10-seater vehicle was seen parked near the former 5 Mile 24 market.


The vehicle reportedly pursued an SUV travelling in the outside lane and stopped it before the Sioni Kami roundabout. The CIT vehicles then encountered what appeared to be a roadblock, with both lanes blocked.


The report said a CIT crew member attempted to explain the situation and enable the vehicles to pass but was confronted at gunpoint. Three other vehicles then moved in from behind, completely blocking both exits and trapping the CIT vehicles.The driver and crew of the second CIT vehicle were forced out at gunpoint.

The CIT unit reported that close to 10 robbers were involved and that more than three factory-made firearms were used, including M16s, carbines and Glock pistols.


The robbers reportedly stole 20 gold bars belonging to PJV and five gold bars from Golden Valley, along with K1 million in foreign exchange currency from ANZ.


They also took one pump-action firearm and one carbine belonging to the CIT security personnel.


After the robbery, the CIT personnel were forced onto a black Ford Ranger and later dropped off at another location.


The keys to both CIT vehicles were also taken as the robbers fled the area.


The two CIT vehicles involved were a Toyota Land Cruiser escort vehicle, registration BCV 242, with crew member and a Toyota Land Cruiser 10-seater asset vehicle, registration BCP 684.


No shots were fired during the incident and no injuries were reported. Police are expected to investigate the robbery and establish the identities of those responsible.

TODAY’S BEHAVIOUR SAYS OTHERWISE  I honestly don't know if we are ready for the PNG Chiefs and NRL-level football if this is the kind of behaviour we are going to show in our stadiums. Today, I saw supporters breaking stadium chairs and throwing them onto the field. Reports from the area indicated that around 10 to 15 chairs, and possibly as many as 20, had already been broken. People were also throwing bottles and other containers onto the field. This isn't passionate support anymore. This is destruction. What makes it even worse is that security had to deal with the situation while people were watching from the stands.
